Choosing Your First Paddleboard

Buying your first paddleboard has gotten complicated with all the options and conflicting advice flying around. As someone who made expensive mistakes on my first few board purchases before understanding what actually matters, I learned everything there is to know about SUP selection. Today, I will share it all with you.

Why Board Selection Matters

That’s what makes understanding board types endearing to us in the paddling community — the right first board makes learning easier and the sport more enjoyable, while the wrong choice can discourage newcomers.

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Board selection depends on your intended use, body size, storage situation, and local water conditions. There’s no single “best” board — only the best board for your specific situation.

Understanding Board Types

All-around boards suit beginners with their stability and versatility across conditions. Touring boards offer better tracking for longer distance paddling but sacrifice some stability. Inflatable boards provide easy storage and transport, making them ideal for apartment dwellers or those without roof racks. Rigid boards deliver better performance but require transportation solutions and storage space.

Getting Your Size Right

Longer boards track straighter and move faster through the water. Wider boards offer more stability, which beginners need. Thicker boards support heavier paddlers without compromising performance. Most beginners do well with boards 10-11 feet long and 31-34 inches wide — this sweet spot balances stability with reasonable performance.

Essential Accessories

A properly sized paddle reaches your wrist when standing with your arm raised overhead. Personal flotation devices are required in most areas and genuinely good to have regardless. Leashes keep you connected to your board — essential for safety. Consider a quality pump and paddle bag if you go the inflatable route.
