Board Maintenance for Paddleboarders
Paddleboard maintenance has gotten complicated with all the conflicting advice flying around. As someone who has learned the hard way about proper board care after watching preventable damage accumulate on my gear, I learned everything there is to know about keeping SUP equipment in top shape. Today, I will share it all with you.
Why Board Care Matters
That’s what makes proper maintenance endearing to us serious paddlers — a well-maintained board performs better, lasts longer, and holds its value if you ever want to sell or trade up.
Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Most board damage is completely preventable with basic care habits. Rinse after saltwater use. Store out of direct sun. Check your fin box and hardware regularly. Simple stuff that saves hundreds in repairs or early replacement.
Care Routines That Work
Rinse your board with fresh water after every saltwater session — salt crystite damages materials over time. Store inflatable boards deflated to about 75% pressure in hot weather to prevent overexpansion. Keep rigid boards out of direct sunlight when not in use; UV degrades the outer layers surprisingly fast.
Check your leash and attachment points monthly. Inspect your paddle for cracks, especially around blade connections. Clean deck pads with mild soap to maintain grip. These small habits prevent the big problems.
Repair Knowledge Worth Having
Minor dings on rigid boards can be fixed with marine epoxy and sanding. Inflatable boards can often be patched with included repair kits. Know when to DIY versus when to take it to a professional — structural damage or delamination needs expert attention. Building a relationship with a local board shop pays dividends when you need advice or repairs.
