Great Lakes Paddleboarding Guide

Paddleboarding the Great Lakes has gotten complicated with all the mixed information flying around. As someone who has paddled on Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, I learned everything there is to know about SUP on these inland seas. Today, I will share it all with you.

Freshwater Ocean Paddling

That’s what makes the Great Lakes endearing to us paddleboard enthusiasts — the combination of ocean-like scale, clear freshwater, and spectacular shoreline scenery that rivals any coastal destination.

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. These lakes are genuinely dangerous if you don’t respect them. They can produce six-foot waves and strong currents. But on calm days, paddling crystal clear water over shipwrecks or along sandstone cliffs rivals anything you’ll find on either coast. The lack of salt is nice too.

What to Expect on the Lakes

Research conditions thoroughly before any paddle — these lakes change fast. I’ve seen glass turn to serious chop within an hour. Check wave forecasts specific to your lake and location, understand that each lake has different character, and know that water temperatures vary enormously by lake and season.

Lake Superior’s Pictured Rocks offers world-class scenery in cold, clear water. Lake Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes provides stunning sand bluff paddling. Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay delivers wilderness experiences. Lake Erie’s islands create destination paddling. And Lake Ontario’s Thousand Islands region is a paddler’s paradise.

Tips From Great Lakes Experience

Visit during the brief but wonderful summer window — late June through August offers the warmest and often calmest conditions, though early mornings are always your best bet. Lake Superior stays cold all year and requires wetsuit consideration even in August. Respect the power of these lakes and never venture far from shore without experience. Connect with the strong paddling communities in Traverse City, Duluth, Milwaukee, and other lakeside cities — they understand their specific lake’s moods and hazards intimately.
