Updated January 2026 | Paddled Bar Harbor and Somes Sound in September 2024
Best Launch: Pretty Marsh picnic area on the west side of Mount Desert Island – 44.3547N, 68.3789W. Calm water, easy put-in, and you can paddle into Bartlett Narrows. I saw harbor seals on every trip in September 2024. Peak foliage was October 5-15 that year – the shoreline colors were insane.
Water temp warning: Maine water stays cold even in summer. I wear a 3mm wetsuit into early September. Hypothermia is real if you fall in. A PFD is legally required and genuinely a good idea here.

Maine Coastal Paddleboarding
Paddleboarding the Maine coast has gotten complicated with all the mixed advice flying around. As someone who has paddled from Bar Harbor to the quiet coves of Acadia and beyond, I learned everything there is to know about SUP in this rugged corner of New England. Today, I will share it all with you.
The Allure of Maine’s Waters
That’s what makes the Maine coastline endearing to us paddleboard enthusiasts — the combination of pristine water clarity, dramatic rocky shores, and wildlife encounters that feel genuinely wild.
Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Maine isn’t easy paddling. The water stays cold year-round, the tides are significant, and the weather can change fast. But on a calm morning in Somes Sound — the only fjord on the East Coast — paddling past granite cliffs with lobster boats working in the distance, you understand why people travel here specifically to paddle.
What to Expect Along the Coast
Research tides and conditions obsessively before any coastal paddle. I’ve seen eight-foot tidal swings that completely change what’s accessible. Check launch access, understand that parking in Acadia during peak season is chaotic, and respect that many beaches involve portages over slippery rocks.
Somes Sound delivers dramatic scenery in protected water. Pretty Marsh on the quiet side of MDI offers calm mornings. Jordan Pond inside Acadia provides mountain backdrop paddling. And the smaller harbors like Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor offer town-based exploring.
Tips From Maine Paddling
Visit late August through early October for the sweet spot of reasonable water temps and fall color — September is truly magical. Always dress for water temperature, not air temperature. Respect the working waterfront and give lobster boats room. Connect with the small but dedicated Maine paddling community through shops in Bar Harbor and Portland — they know where conditions are right for any given forecast.
